3-D Studio:Design 2013

Technology is moving at such a fast rate these days, that our computers become obsolete within a few years. The new one’s are inherently quicker, faster, and able to provide more information. Well, the same thing is happening in the building world. People are more informed than ever about topics such as building science and sustainable design. http://www.ecosafespaces.com/

Tight budgets are no problem for the EcoSafe Spaces Team:) Enjoy!

Value Remodel

Value is extremely important in today’s day and age. Though its fun to work on a big budget, its not always practical. Take a look at this video of a cosmetic remodel my company preformed on this 1950’s home in the Travis Heights neighborhood of South Austin.

  • Zero VOC paint throughout (all one color)
  • Polished concrete floors
  • finger-jointed baseboards
These simple touches give this older home a very modern feel, on a very minimal budget.

Lending a Hand with Engineered Beams

When this historic church was originally restored after a fire in the 1930’s, engineered beams didn’t exist. You had to use really long pieces of wood /stone or sophisticated and time consuming jointing methods. Times have changed. Today we are able to use much smaller trees for much larger beams.  Would-be wood scraps/waste are used to produce highly efficient and super strong L.V.L.s.

Supporting a Pillar of the Community

The Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church has been a pillar to the community of Clarksville in Austin, TX for over 140 years. Now its time Sweet Home gets some new support in the form of a 14′ tall structural footing that will double as a baptismal. The baptismal portion will be accessible from  the second level of the church in the choir area. What a meaningful and fulfilling project this is:)

Product Review: Vermont Natural Coatings

Unconventional stains are tricky to figure out at first, but there are definitely a few out there that more than make the grade! For us, Vermont Natural Coatings tintable water based stain, was a quality product that was pleasant for the applicator and everyone else to be around. There was no odor, and no feelings of discomfort mental or physical, absolutely nothing but a beautiful finished product. See the video for greater detail…

Chemical-Free Termite Prevention

Insect infestations and chemical exposure are both valid concerns we must consider when constructing our homes. Not very long ago, chemicals termite preventives were standard practice. Today’s alternatives are more in line with health and nature. In lieu of chemical termite preventatives, Chemical-free termite prevention can be accomplished using a thin steel mesh (called Termimesh around here). This mesh is strategically wrapped around all the slab penetrations (like drains and waterlines) before the concrete foundation is poured. Immediately after the concrete is poured and has dried, the mesh becomes a permanent barrier to harmful pests and insects, blocking their desired route to a potential food source, your home. Take away the termite entry points before the house is built, and you drastically reduce the chances of termites invading and potentially damaging you home. These photos show Termimesh in action at one of our recent job sites.
